Lionel McQueen, a name well known throughout the WA Amateur Football League, is not only a legend at his home club, Cockburn Amateur Football Club, but throughout Perth football. Lionel has devoted over 30 years of his life to the Western Australian Amateur Football League as a club patron, water boy, bar and canteen manager, committee member, treasurer, vice president and president.
Lionel started with Cockburn Lakes in 1980 as an inaugural member, and only two years later became club president. Lionel held this presidential role for six years before moving out of the position and into a general committee member role. In this same year, 1987 Lionel was also awarded Life Membership at Cockburn Lakes Amateur Football Club.
The following year Lionel moved back into a higher role as club vice president, and continued as bar/canteen manager, a role he would go on to hold until 1995, and again from 1998 to 2012.
Lionel also dedicated himself to his local community, outside of his football club. In the 1980’s he was a delegate to the South Fremantle Sporting Council and is currently a delegate to Cockburn Council Recreation Committee. In 2012, Lionel was a City of Cockburn Nominee, and was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the South Fremantle District Council in 2012. Receiver of an Australian Sports Medal in 2000, Lionel then sat on the Western Australian Amateur Football League Board for three seasons from 2004 to 2006.
Lionel McQueen has made a remarkable contribution to the Western Australian Amateur Football League through his contribution over numerous roles in both club and community environments.
His tireless efforts, influence and involvement over the past 30 years is extremely impressive and is why his name is etched on the walls of the Cockburn Lakes Amateur Football Club and was awarded with the Western Australian Amateur Football League Life Membership in 2013.
